If you're making aliyah from North America, you've probably heard the advice: start with Nefesh B'Nefesh. But what actually happens after you hit "submit" on that application? I'm breaking down the real process—timeline, documents, and what your personal aliyah advisor will actually do for you.

Start 8-10 Months Before Your Target aliyah Date

Nefesh B'Nefesh recommends beginning your paperwork 8-10 months before your estimated aliyah date by completing the online application on nbn.org.il. Yes, that feels like forever away. But here's why it matters: the average processing time is 4-6 months, and that doesn't include the time you'll spend hunting down documents or waiting for FBI background checks (which can take 6-8 weeks in some jurisdictions).

Shortly after submitting the application, you will be assigned a Nefesh B'Nefesh aliyah advisor. This person becomes your point of contact for questions, document clarifications, and timeline updates throughout the entire process.

The Joint NBN-Jewish Agency Application

Here's what makes Nefesh B'Nefesh different: Nefesh B'Nefesh works in cooperation with the Jewish Agency for Israel to facilitate the aliyah process through a joint application. This means one application gets you both NBN services (flight coordination, financial assistance, post-aliyah support) and Jewish Agency approval (the legal authorization to make aliyah under Israel's Law of Return).

Upon submission of your application, you will receive access to a personal web page which allows you to track the status of your aliyah file, upload documents, and see which documents still need to be added. Think of it as your aliyah dashboard—you'll be checking it often.

Required Documents: What You Actually Need

You should submit all documents together with your application—copies to Nefesh B'Nefesh, but keep the originals for your records and to present when required by the Jewish Agency or Misrad Hapnim (Ministry of Interior). Core documents include:

  • Birth certificates for all family members
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable)
  • Proof of Jewish identity (parent's ketubah, synagogue membership letter, or other documentation)
  • Passport copies—main page plus any name changes
  • Police background check with apostille (ages 14+)
  • Medical certificate (general health declaration)
  • Passport-sized photos

All US and UK applicants over age 14 are required by the Ministry of Interior to present a police background check with an apostille from their countries of origin, plus a background check from all countries they lived in for more than a year. For Americans, NBN offers FBI background check services including fingerprinting and apostille for 700 NIS.

The Review and Interview Process

Once Nefesh B'Nefesh receives all necessary components, the review process generally takes four to six weeks. After NBN reviews your file, they notify the Jewish Agency to review your application and decide whether to invite you for an interview.

You will then need to meet for an interview with your local aliyah shaliach (a representative from the Jewish Agency), where you will be asked to present all the original documents you submitted in step one. The interview typically takes 30-60 minutes and covers your background, motivation, and plans for life in Israel.

Approval, Visa, and Flight

After your interview, you'll receive a "Mazal Tov" email—your official aliyah approval. Instructions on how to apply for a visa will be provided with your aliyah approval from the Jewish Agency, and it can take 18 business days or more for the visa to be issued. NBN recommends applying 1-2 months before your estimated departure, and once issued, the aliyah visa is valid for 6 months.

The flight benefit includes a one-way ticket on a Nefesh B'Nefesh scheduled El Al flight, and upon receiving flight benefit approval, the NBN Flights Department will contact you to submit a flight request based on available options.

What About Making Aliyah from Inside Israel?

Already in Israel on a tourist visa? Nefesh B'Nefesh's Guided Aliyah program enables US and Canadian citizens currently residing in Israel to make aliyah through the Population and Immigration Authority while receiving the full array of NBN services, including assisted government processing, financial aid, and post-aliyah assistance. Applications must be submitted by the beginning of the month in order to complete processing on time.

The paperwork feels overwhelming—I get it. But as of August 2022, Nefesh B'Nefesh has facilitated the aliyah process for over 75,000 people. You're not figuring this out alone, and your aliyah advisor is there to walk you through every upload, every apostille, and every "wait, which ketubah do they need?" moment. Start early, stay organized, and keep your originals safe. B'hatzlacha.
