Quick Answer

A shared container from North America to Israel costs $3,000-$6,000. A full 20ft container runs $8,000-$14,000. New olim have 3 years to import household goods duty-free in up to 3 separate shipments. Most experienced olim advise shipping less than you think you need.

Container Options and Real 2026 Prices

Shared container (LCL — Less than Container Load): $3,000-$6,000 from the US or Canada. You share the container with other families. Delivery takes 8-12 weeks. Best for: 1-2 bedroom apartment worth of goods.

Full 20ft container: $8,000-$14,000 from North America. Exclusive use — your goods only. Same 8-10 week sea transit. Best for: families with large amount of furniture or a 3+ bedroom home.

Full 40ft container: $12,000-$20,000+. Only needed for very large households. Most families do not need this.

Air freight: $10-$20 per kg. Use for irreplaceable items you need immediately — important documents, medications, a few personal items. Not cost-effective for furniture or books.

The Duty-Free Customs Exemption

New olim receive a significant customs exemption on household goods imported within 3 years of aliyah. You can use the exemption in up to 3 separate shipments, so you do not have to ship everything at once. The exemption covers household furniture, personal effects, electronics, and appliances. It does not cover vehicles (separate vehicle exemption applies), commercial goods, or new items still in original packaging (Israel customs may assess duty on these).

Items that attract customs even with the exemption: alcohol, firearms, medications above personal use quantities, and goods that appear to be for resale.

What Most Olim Regret Shipping

Furniture — Israeli apartments are smaller and Israeli furniture is readily available, often at lower prices than shipping from abroad. Second-hand furniture on Facebook Marketplace Israel and Yad2.co.il is excellent and cheap.

Books — heavy, expensive to ship, and often available in English at used bookshops in Israel (Tmol Shilshom in Jerusalem, Port Said in Tel Aviv). Ship your most important books and leave the rest.

Large appliances — Israeli electrical current is 220V/50Hz. American 110V appliances need transformers or should be replaced. Fridges, washing machines, and dryers are cheaper to buy locally than to ship and convert.

What is Worth Shipping

Sentimental items and family heirlooms — irreplaceable. Ship these. Good quality tools — Israeli hardware stores are decent but professional-grade tools are expensive. High-end electronics — if 220V compatible, ship them. North American prices on Apple products, gaming equipment, and cameras are meaningfully lower than Israel prices. Clothes — Israeli clothing is expensive. Ship your full wardrobe.

Choosing a Shipping Company

Use a company with specific Israel experience. Companies regularly used by the Anglo aliyah community include Sonigo International Movers, El Al Cargo, and several others. Ask for quotes from at least 3 companies. Ask specifically whether the quote includes Israeli customs clearing, port fees, and delivery to your door — some quotes exclude these and the additional costs can be significant (₪2,000-₪5,000 in Israeli port/customs fees).

FAQ

Q: Can I ship a car to Israel?
A: Yes. New olim get a significant customs reduction on one vehicle import within 3 years of aliyah. The saving depends on the car's value and age. Get a quote from a licensed Israeli customs broker (kohen mekasher) before deciding — the economics vary significantly by vehicle.

Q: How long does sea shipping actually take?
A: From East Coast US ports: 4-6 weeks at sea plus 2-3 weeks for Israeli customs clearing = 6-10 weeks total. From West Coast: add 1-2 weeks. Plan to live without your shipment for at least 8 weeks from departure.

Q: What if I want to ship more than 3 years after aliyah?
A: After 3 years, standard Israeli customs rates apply. The duty on household goods can be 12-18% of assessed value. Most olim complete their shipments within the 3-year window to avoid this.
