Quick Answer

New olim are entitled to 500 hours of free Hebrew instruction (Ulpan) through Misrad HaKlita for up to 18 months from aliyah. Classes run 4-5 hours per day, five days a week. Enrol within the first month — the entitlement does not automatically extend if delayed.

What the Ulpan Entitlement Covers

The state Ulpan programme provides 500 hours of intensive Hebrew at no charge to any new oleh within 18 months of aliyah. Most full-time Ulpan programmes complete the 500 hours over approximately 5 months. If you cannot attend full-time, you can do afternoon or evening classes which take longer but give you the same 500 hours total. The 500-hour Ulpan typically takes you from zero Hebrew to functional conversational Hebrew — enough to navigate daily life, government offices, and basic work situations.

How to Enrol

1. At your Misrad HaKlita appointment (which happens in the first 1-2 weeks after landing), tell your absorption advisor you want to enrol in Ulpan. They will direct you to the relevant municipality or Ulpan centre near you.

2. Alternatively, contact your local municipality (iriya) directly and ask for the Ulpan coordinator. Every major city and most smaller towns run Ulpan classes sponsored by the state.

3. MASA programmes also offer Ulpan as part of their packages for olim in their 20s-30s. These are often higher intensity and include social programming alongside the Hebrew instruction.

Types of Ulpan Available

Kibbutz Ulpan: You live on a kibbutz and work half the day, study Hebrew the other half. Free board and lodging included. Popular with younger single olim. Waiting lists exist so apply early at machon-ulpan.com.

City Ulpan: Morning, afternoon, or evening classes in a standard classroom setting. Most flexible — you can live independently and choose your schedule. Available in all major cities.

Ulpan Etzion (Jerusalem): The flagship government Ulpan in Jerusalem, considered the best structured programme. Very competitive placement — apply immediately on arrival.

Online Ulpan: Misrad HaKlita now offers online Ulpan options for olim in areas with limited local provision. Quality varies but is a useful supplement.

What Level Will You Start At?

On enrolment you take a brief placement test to assess your Hebrew level. Levels run from Aleph (complete beginner) through Vav (advanced). Most English-speaking olim with no prior Hebrew start at Aleph and progress to Bet or Gimel by the end of their 500 hours. Those with synagogue Hebrew or prior study often start at Bet.

Cost of Private Hebrew Lessons After Ulpan

Once your 500-hour entitlement is used, private Hebrew lessons cost ₪80-₪150/hour. A typical olim tutor charges ₪100/hour. Use your free Ulpan hours fully before supplementing with private lessons — the saving over 500 hours is ₪40,000-₪75,000 compared to full private tuition.

FAQ

Q: Can I do Ulpan while working?
A: Yes. Evening and afternoon classes are available in most cities. Some employers also allow new olim to take a few hours off weekly for Ulpan — ask your HR department as many Israeli companies encourage this.

Q: What if I already speak Hebrew from synagogue?
A: You will be placed in an appropriate level based on the placement test. Many Anglo olim with synagogue Hebrew start at Bet-Aleph or Bet-Bet and find the programme moves faster than expected with prior foundation.

Q: Is Ulpan worth doing if I plan to work in English?
A: Yes. Even if your job is English-speaking, daily life in Israel requires Hebrew — doctors, government offices, landlords, neighbours. Skipping free Ulpan and then paying for private lessons later is one of the most common expensive mistakes olim make.
